Given the current complexities in Polish-Ukrainian relations, the study of historical figures from the shared cultural borderland is particularly relevant. The focus of this research is Paulin Święcicki (1841–1876) – a writer, playwright, and public figure whose stance represents a rare instance of authentic dual ethno-national and linguistic identity. An analysis of his biography and bilingual creative legacy illustrates the phenomenon of his self-identification as a “Rusyn-Pole”. The study proposes an approach to analyzing his literary works through the lens of memory studies, specifically by identifying and systematizing key “mnemotopoi” associated with the Ukrainian geo-cultural space, its people, and its traditions.
Within the scope of researching the mnemotopics of Ukraine in Święcicki’s work, the study classifies and analyzes key types of mnemotopoi – spatial, existential, character- based, religious, and historical – that best illustrate the author’s artistic vision regarding memory. These include the mnemotopoi of Ukraine-Arcadia, the steppe, the mound, the Cossack (characterized by a dichotomous structure), the Zaporozhian Sich, the blind Cossack seer (prophet), the sacred liturgy, the cult of the Mother of God, and the January Uprising. The following key features of the mnemotopics in the works under study have been identified: the dichotomous nature and internal contradictoriness of images (the author’s mnemotopoi lack univocality); the combination of the Arcadian myth with metaphysical dread (the Ukrainian geo-cultural space is constructed through the juxtaposition of an original, pure “Ukraine-Arcadia” – created by God for enjoyment – and an artificial Western civilization); the transmission of collective memory and ethos (the mnemotopoi are firmly rooted in folk traditions and mentality); intercultural dialogue and religious syncretism (adapting Orthodox liturgical practices, rituals, and the distinctive Cossack cult of the Mother of God for the Polish-Catholic reader); the martyrological dimension and traumatic nature of historical memory (the historical layer of the mnemotopics is deeply marked by the extreme experience of the defeat of the January Uprising); and the actualization of the image of the prophet-seer. Thus, a system of representative mnemotopoi in the work of Paulin Święcicki has been identified and analyzed, illustrating the specific nature of his artistic thought at the intersection of cultures and Christian traditions.
