Abstract

This article is dedicated to an analysis of the multifaceted spectrum of Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz’s biographical and creative connections with Ukraine, as well as their reflection in A. Serednicki’s literary-critical reception.

It is noted that the study of Polish-Ukrainian literary ties in contemporary Ukrainian comparative literature is one of the highest priorities, particularly in view of the centuries-long creative interactions between the two neighbouring nations, as well as their shared history and culture.

It is established that the works of J. Iwaszkiewicz have consistently been the focus of attention for both Ukrainian and Polish literary scholars; amongst the latter, a significant role is played by the research of A. Serednicki—a philologist, writer, educator and translator well-known in both neighbouring countries—who most often wrote under the literary pseudonym Antin Verba.

The Polish Ukrainianist devoted several separate studies to J. Iwaszkiewicz’s literary activity and his creative ties with Ukraine: “Son of the Ukrainian Land” (1964), “Yaroslav Ivashkevych” (1974), “Yaroslav Ivashkevych” (1984), “Kyiv in the Life and Work of Yaroslav Ivashkevych” (1998), and also discussed the subject in his other works: “Cooperation of Poles with the Press Organs of the USKT” (1979), “The Literary Polish Section of “Nashe Slovo” up to 1980” (1984), “Yevhen Samokhvalenko” (1986), “Yevhen Malaniuk and Polish Writers” (1994), “T. Shevchenko’s Contacts with Poles” (1996) and others.

It is noted that A. Serednicki personally knew the writer, and in his literary-critical analyses of Shevchenko’s work, he primarily highlighted various cultural and historical aspects of the writer’s interest in the interactions between Ukrainians and Poles — as reflected in his works — at different stages of their shared history.

This article, drawing on A. Serednicki’s critical analysis, examines J. Iwaszkiewicz’s literary responses to the poetic and translational work of the Ukrainian poets T. Shevchenko, Y. Malanyuk, M. Bazhan, M. Rylskyi and Y. Samokhvalenko.

According to A. Serednicki, a significant proportion of J. Iwaszkiewicz’s literary works are thematically linked to Ukraine. These include “The Autumn Banquet” (1917), “The Moon Rises” (1925), “Near Hoverla” (1926), “Ilarii, the Accountant’s Son” (1923), “The Book of My Memories” (1957), “Glory and Praise” (1956), “Red Shields” (1959), “Stanisława Wysocka and Her Kyiv Theatre” (1963) and others.

Particular note is made of the significance of the image of Kyiv in the Polish writer’s work.
